Community Mapping and Volunteered Geographic Information.

The Applied Geomatics Research Group is located in Middleton, Nova Scotia, Canada. As part of the Nova Scotia Community College we are working with local and regional groups to use geomatics technology.  We are developing web based mapping applications to engage citizens in Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI).  Our vision is to harness the power of our communities to map our region, promote the creative rural economy, create a tool for decesion making and tell our stories.

Our definition of community mapping is to identify and locate information about our communities, place them on a map to share with others about our historical, social, cultural and economic locations and to update the information that we collect about our communities.

Our team of technical experts role is to assist communities by developing the databases, base mapping, web map interface, data management tools and provide training and support so they can become "neo-geographers". The community's role is to collect those assets, stories, photos, social media and information to be the content for the map. In many communities this local knowledge can be lost if we do not begin to capture it for future generations and we can use this community generated information to better understand and promote our communities!
